Strange Keyboard Layout on Windows 10 Mobile & Lumia 950XL

27. July 2016
I recently encountered a strange issue with the layout of the keyboard on my Lumia 950XL. This happened after a one of the recent OS updates and it took me a little while researching to figure it out. The issue was that my keyboard was all squashed to the left, instead of taking up the full width of the phone. In addition to that the cursor point was on the right hand side of the keyboard. [More]

Nebraska.Code() 2016

23. May 2016
Another Nebraska.Code() is in the books and it was a real blast. The organizers, Adam & Ken, really put in the effort and run a great conference. The other speakers are always quality company and I really enjoyed meeting a few new ones and getting to know some much better. One of the things I enjoy about conference is the circle of friends you make and meet across the country as you travel to this conference and that conference. We had lots of deep, and many more entertaining conversations. For the second year in a row Richard Campbell (of .Net Rocks!) was in attendance. This year it was because he was coordinating a code-a-thon to work on his Humanitarian Toolbox charity. The charity is really interesting and I’ve thought it would be nice to contribute in some way for a while now, but didn’t know where to start. So, when I heard about the opportunity to spend some of my time and skills to work on a project that helps organization like the Red Cross bring aid to disaster victims... [More]

Microsoft Build 2016

27. April 2016
I hate it when I find a blog post draft that I forgot to post for *weeks*, it’s a little late, but here are some of my impressions from Microsoft’s Build conference this year. This year's build was pretty exciting for .NET developers. With strong progress around the Windows platform and major announcements in the mobile developer space. Build was an fun experience and I was able to both reconnect with friends I've made on the conference circuit and meet a lot of new faces. Here are some of my reactions to the announcements, activities, and experience of the Build 2016 day one keynote. Windows Updates The first major item Satya covered was the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (previously known as Redstone on Windows Insider builds) that will be coming this summer. They have been busy over the 8 months and had some pleasant, and some surprising features to announce. There were a lot of the expected "improvement" updates, like improved pen and touch support. The update will add... [More]

The Return of Visual Voicemail to the Lumia 950 XL (Dual Sim)

18. April 2016
For those that purchased an unlocked Lumia 950 XL from Microsoft in the last few months and have been frustrated at the lack of Visual Voice (that’s everyone who bought one) you can rejoice. Last week I had sketchy WiFi access so I just discovered that I had an update available last night. When I went to take a look at the change log I discovered this little gem: Support for Visual Voicemail on Dual SIM phones It sounds like this has been available in the Windows Insiders build for a little while, but I’ve been hesitant to put my primary phone on the insiders builds. So I didn’t realize it was in the wild.. If I had I might have bit the bullet and jumped on the fast ring. The lack of Visual Voicemail on my Lumia 950 XL was pretty frustrating and nearly had me returning it to the Microsoft Store.. It definitely had me hesitant to recommend it to anyone not technical. While it may seem like a little thing to miss, it is one of those advances in user interface that makes the old w... [More]

Diving the Bay Island of Guanaja, Honduras (Part 2 - Traveling Photographer)

28. March 2016
One of the hardest decisions I had to make leading up to our trip was whether to check (most of) my camera gear, or try to find some way to have it as a carry-on. I say hard, because I just dropped thousands of dollars on equipment I’ve only ever “tested” around here and I was now considering putting it an expensive box and hoping it arrived with me at my destination. As I previously wrote, you know I chose to check, and it was practicality that won out in the end. There was just too much equipment and it is too large to try to find some way to have it all with me. It is all something that insurance can replace and while I’d be bummed if it didn’t get to my destination, I would still have some options available to me (like the GoPro in my carry-on). [More]
